Excursions

Discover the provinces of Berchtesgaden and Salzburg on a day trip filled visits to exciting places of interest. Treat your family to unforgettable holiday in the Alps.

Berchtesgadener-Land

Salt Mine:

The Berchtesgaden Salt Mine  invites you to venture on a journey into the region’s historic mine shafts. The mine, which has been in operation since 1517, is a popular destination for tourists, who join the present-day miners. Its popularity is hardly a surprise – the Salt Cathedral, Salt Laboratory, Treasure Chamber, Mirror Lake and giant slides show the mine truly has plenty to offer. And, as for the little ones, the ride on the mine train, alone, which rolls deep inside the mountain, is guaranteed to fill your children with awe.

Predigtstuhlbahn:

The Predigtstuhlbahn is the oldest large cabin cable car in the world. It has been whisking people across the mountains since 1927, without incident. During your ride, you will be able to savour the breathtaking landscape that spreads beneath you. The stunning vista includes the city of Salzburg, majestic mountain chains, shimmering alpine lakes and the mountains in the Saalach Valley.

Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle’s Nest):

Another place of interest in the province of Berchtesgaden is Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the Eagle’s Nest. This splendid building atop of Obersalzberg mountain bears a historical burden, for it was originally conceived as a birthday gift for Adolf Hitler. The Bavarian government decided to continue to preserve this building as a grim reminder of the terrors of Nazi rule. The unrestricted setting of Kehlstein on Obersalzberg mountain allows you to experience stunning views of the Alps during your visit, while examining the extensive material describing the history of the building.

Like a Fjord surrounded by mountains

With a depth of 192 m Lake Königseethe deepest lake in Bavaria, is another must-see attraction in the region. Nestled between Watzmann, Jenner and Hagengebirge mountains the lake’s emerald green waters provide a habitat for a variety of rare species. Hop aboard one of the large electric cruise boats and enjoy the peaceful scenery as you sail past listed historic boat houses, cascading waterfalls and the towering cliffs of St. Bartholomä.

Salzburg for kids – never a dull moment

A visit to the city of Salzburg with the kids offers something for everyone. While parents trace the footsteps of Mozart, children can enjoy a range of holiday activities guaranteed to make their eyes sparkle with delight. A visit to the museum, for example, can be an exciting adventure.  The Museum of Modern Art on Mönchsberg hill offers children's workshops and museum tours for various age groups. Alternatively your little ones can embark on a supervised kids’ tour http://www.salzburg-guide.at/of the Old Town, which includes a visit to a blacksmith and Mozart’s birthplace, and discover how exciting history can be. As young city explorers your children will find that Salzburg offers a fun way to learn about its many places of interest, as a visit to Hohensalzburg Fortresswill prove. The fortress, also accessible by funicular (for kids with weary feet), is well worth the visit.

In addition, Salzburg and the surrounding region also offer a number of other exciting places of interest for the whole family to explore:  the Natural History Museum, the Marionette Theatre, the Toy Museum, the Fürst Confectionery, where the Mozartkugel (Mozart ball), a perfectly round chocolate, was invented, and, naturally, the zoo
